ERGO ARM Upgrade omnilux

Background

A prominent medical aesthetic clinic in Singapore, EHA Clinic, uses Omnilux to provide a highly effective phototherapy procedure that uses red and blue light to eliminate acne-causing bacteria and heal your skin.

Dr. Elias Tam, founder and director of EHA Clinic, noticed some damage to the outer casing of the Omnilux Units.  However, since these units were outside the warranty period, the local distributor proposed a full replacement of the unit.  It did not make sense to replace functional units because of the damage to the casing.   As such, Dr. Tam requested our help to investigate the problem and find a cost-effective solution.

After performing a detailed investigation, we realised that the damage to the case was due to an overhanging load exerted on the casing.  The root cause of this overhanging load was because the Omnilux LEDs units which weigh about 2 kgs need to be secured properly over a patient’s face while the actually equipment is 75cm away from the patient.

Based on the damage assessment, there was a high probability that the LED Units would fall onto the patient’s face during therapy. Since the most expensive part of the system is the Electronics and the special LEDs, we proposed the ERGO-ARM Upgrade which just replaces the LED handing arm while maintaining the functional integrity of the system.

The ERGO-ARM is a power lifter with a long reach and can be easily manipulated by a human.  It is designed to be installed on equipment that need to secure and hold heavy payloads over sensitive locations WITHOUT any support.

The ERGO-ARM uses worm gears and miter gear mechanisms for torque transmission and self-locking features.  Customized locks make it easy for the clinical technician to easily set-up and fix the LEDs.  Custom-designed 3D printed covers give the ERGO ARM upgrade a safe, aesthetically pleasing look while also making is very simple for servicing and maintenance.
